This past summer I was introduced to homemade kefir. I was suffering from what we thought was acid reflux, and so I researched some natural methods to treat it, and stumbled upon kefir. I couldn't imagine drinking a "liquid yogurt drink" or a "fermented dairy drink" but everywhere on the internet I read fascinating testimonials about the health benefits of kefir, so I decided to try it. I didn't want to buy the commercial brands, I wanted to make my own. The co-op where I get my raw milk from has a lady who had excess kefir grains, and so she gave me some for starters. I used raw milk, and started as directed by the many websites out there that teach you all you can learn. I make my kefir by fermenting it for 24 hours, and I flavor it with vanilla and liquid stevia. I drink it as a morning protein shake. Some of the diseases/illnesses that kefir works to improve include:
- colitis / ulcerative colitis
- irritable bowel syndrome
- leaky gut
- acid reflux
- heartburn
- gastritis
