Researchers find corn syrup worse than sugar for weight

Researchers find corn syrup worse than sugar for weight

By Aparajita Bijapurkar  Huffington Post
Contributor

Published: Friday, March 26th, 2010
Psychology professor Bart Hoebel’s research group found that rats with access to high fructose corn syrup experienced a greater increase in body weight, body fat and triglyceride levels than those with access to sucrose or table sugar. Though some bloggers have pounced on the research to blame Americans’ bulging beltlines on corn in the week since the research was published online in the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, members of the research group cautioned that the results are preliminary and do not necessarily carry over to humans. In two studies, the researchers looked at the effects on rats when they ate high fructose corn syrup. The first study showed that rats fed a diet of water sweetened with high fructose corn syrup for eight weeks, in addition to rat chow, gained more weight than those who drank water mixed with table sugar.
The second study, which examined the long term effects of high fructose corn syrup consumption, followed rats over a period of six months. The rats drinking the corn syrup solution had higher abdominal body fat than the sucrose solution group.
Nicole Avena, a visiting research associate from the University of Florida who worked on the study, said that the researchers’ primary motivation was to compare sucrose to high fructose corn syrup to determine if they produce different effects on body weight.
Miriam Bocarsly ’06 GS, who also worked on the project, said in an e-mail that the studies’ results do not “immediately translate to humans.”
“It’s important to point out that this is a very specific set of studies, done in rats,” she explained, adding that “I’m not a medical doctor or clinician, I am a scientist, and we have some interesting findings.”
Avena noted that it is not possible to proportionally approximate how much high fructose corn syrup humans would have to consume in order to gain as much weight as the rats because the animals metabolize calories differently from humans. She added that the metabolic processes differ in individual humans as well.
Avena said that an adapted version of their studies could be conducted on human subjects to see if the same results would occur, though she added that such studies would be conducted elsewhere, since Hoebel’s laboratory does not conduct clinical trials.
If further research determines that high fructose corn syrup leads to weight gain in humans than other sugars do, it would provide important evidence to inform efforts to lower obesity.
High-fructose corn syrup is presently used more commonly than sucrose as a sweetener in the American diet, Avena said. Americans consume 60 pounds of the sweetener per person annually. Corn syrup is inexpensive sweetener, in part because of billions of dollars of government subsidies to corn producers.
Avena said that she hopes the Food and Drug Administration or other government agencies consider their findings and those of other studies in future planning, though she said that the research team does not plan to lobby for policy change based on its findings.
“Our information is out there for people to consider and interpret,” she said. “We are research scientists, basically, just interested in understanding why people over-eat and gain weight. There are other people out there who make policy decisions, and we hope that this study and others like it might have some influence.”
Some past studies have shown that fructose causes an increase in body weight, Avena said. Fewer studies, however, have looked at the effects of high fructose corn syrup. Avena noted that there there are some differences between the two sweeteners. As one example, high-fructose corn syrup contains slightly more fructose: It contains 55 percent fructose, whereas sucrose is broken down in the body to 50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose.
Avena said that data from studies on fructose, in addition to clinical research, could help to conclusively link high fructose corn syrup to obesity, but more research is needed before definitive claims can be made.
Another line of research conducted in the Hoebel laboratory has been the study of sugar addiction.
“We have published quite a few studies showing that rats will become addicted to sucrose,” Avena said. “They’ll show signs of withdrawal, craving and brain changes that are akin to what you’d see in an animal that’s addicted to a drug of abuse.”
She added, however, that there is no current evidence for addiction to high fructose corn syrup.
For the research team, this study is only the beginning.
Elyse Powell ’11, an undergraduate on the research team, said that they plan to both replicate and follow up on the experiment.
“The ultimate goal would be to understand what makes high fructose corn syrup different from sucrose, and how these sweeteners can affect the body, brain and behavior,” Avena said.
Hoebel could not be reached for comment.

Life is Great!! Life is Beautiful! Life is filled with Blessings!

So while I think about my life, I can't begin to express how many blessings I receive on a daily basis. I sometimes like to think that my whole life has been blessed because my mom is an Angel, looking down from Heaven, making sure good things happen to me. I used to think that as a child, and sometimes still do, as an adult. My mom's only sister, my aunt Linda, lives in Australia. Just yesterday she sent me an email with some scanned pictures attached. They were of my grandparents, my mom, and another great great grandmother. I really enjoy things like this. Besides, the pictures are SO beautiful.

And Purify Your Body's detox foot pads are doing well. It seems that people are getting more interested in their health. They are taking charge of their health more and more. Maybe it is because of the healthcare reform we are facing. I don't know the reason, but I am reaping the benefits. Folks are looking for relief from fibromyalgia, cures for migraines, pain relief from gout, insomnia, fatigue, Lyme disease, and so many other forms of illnesses. The first thing that people need to do is look for what is going on in their life. What toxins are they putting in their bodies? With fibromyalgia, there has been links to environmental toxins. Well, if you can't control your environment (say you work in a hair salon and are exposed to chemicals all day long -- for perms, colorings, etc), then the second best thing to do would be to use detox foot pads to get rid of the toxins. In that situation you won't ever get ahead... the foot pads probably won't ever come out clean, because you just keep putting the toxins in your body... but at least your symptoms will start to go away and you will get relief. Unfortunately for those folks they probably will want to be using the foot pads indefinitely, instead of maybe just for 2-3 months every year.

There are quite a few customers of mine that use the foot pads year round. That is great, sure. By all means. Many of these people are older and find that by using the detox pads they have a better quality of life. Who wouldn't want a better quality of life!? This is great.

Keep on detoxing. I will keep on providing the highest quality detox foot pads for the lowest price.

OxyFlush, MMS, Detox Foot Pads, and NutraSilver

I have been getting a LOT of orders lately for OxyFlush - a colon cleanser that I offer through my website. I have been using this for about 5 years now, along with OxyEarth, and OxyLift. I am a big proponent of Oxygen Therapies, and even have an ozone generator at home to infuse my liquids and oils with ozone. Some people are buying a dozen at a time! YAY!

And, MMS - Miracle Mineral Solution is also selling well. I shipped my last one that I have in stock today, but placed an order for more MMS kits yesterday, so you don't have to worry, they will be back in stock later this week. We actually used some MMS last night to disinfect our water heaters. I don't know the lingo, but there are some type of steel or metal rods that go into our water heaters, it is supposed to attract bacteria, but once they stop working the water starts to smell, etc. We could have used bleach to clean our water, but I try to avoid things like that. I know even FEMA recommends it as a water purification source, and in emergencies I wouldn't hesitate to use it, but when we have something healthy that does the job just as well, if not better, then why not use that? So I activated the MMS with 10% citric acid mixture. I have citric acid crystals, and did a 9:1 ratio pure water to the crystals. I then took 1/2 tablespoon of MMS, and 2 1/2 tablespoons of the citric acid mixture, and mixed them together in a cup. They need between 3 to 10 minutes of activation. Right at first it is clear liquid, with no smell, and as it activates, it turns yellowish, and starts smelling STRONGLY like bleach. It is sodium chloride activated by citric acid, which creates chlorine dioxide, which is NOT poisonous.

So, as it turns out, I was able to pour one batch into each tank. Our water smells so fresh, and CLEAN!!! No bleachy smells. I am so impressed. After Steve drains the tanks later this month, I am thinking that I am going to do that again, just because I can :) There were no smells coming from our water, and my shower was so fresh and clean, so I feel good!

I am also getting a lot of orders for NutraSilver. Most people by 3 or 4 bottles at a time. I am guessing that these folks are suffering from Morgellons so of course I want to ship them their product as soon as possible so they can get relief from their symptoms. Many people are having great success with using both NutraSilver and MMS together.

Steve helped me last night by putting labels on my detox foot pads for me. I am running low on my stock of detox foot patches, so I hope to get more in within a week. I have enough for at least one more week. Once I get my new order of foot pads in, I can start offering promotions and deals and sales on detox foot pads. I have a lot of things planned!! I just need the inventory. It should have shipped out from overseas yesterday. So, within a week I will be full of inventory!!!

Interesting bit of information about Vitamin D and sun exposure that I found online on a Dr. Website this morning

Obese individuals may have difficulty absorbing Vitamin D from sun exposure because the subcutaneous fat essentially blocks part of the D from entering the bloodstream.

we don't like lentils but LOVE homemade baked beans and... what is new with me! (blog posting)

I am trying out some recipes made from scratch from my food storage ingredients. I am not a big fan of lentils at all... (It may have been the way I cooked them, too... I soaked them overnight and cooked them with some low fat turkey kielbasa -- maybe if I used some italian sausage or bacon it would have been better). If you have a lentil soup recipe you want to have me try, let me know and I will try it!

But... I did make homemade baked beans. They were a hit. I can't wait to go home tonight to make more. I never knew that you use white beans for them! I always thought it was a brown bean of some sort.

My next thing I am going to try is pinto beans. I love mexican style foods, and so I will try some pinto beans. Maybe some black beans, too! My friend from Mexico gave me a simple recipe to cook the pinto beans in.

For the next two weeks I am doing my twice yearly treatment of DE on my dogs and cat. DE (Diatomaceous Earth) is a natural de-wormer. Our animals have never been diagnosed with having worms but that doesn't mean that they don't. They play around enough other dogs so that if another dog had worms, my dogs could easily catch them, and bring them into our home. So, while we aren't "treating" worms, we do this just to clean out their systems "just in case". I sprinkle it dry, on their food. I am also adding pumpkin to their foods because for some reason their dogpoo is a little on the soft side and I want it to firm up (how gross is this talking about this topic!! YUCK!)

Now, another thing I am going to try is boiled wheat. It makes a very healthy breakfast cereal. I will probably flavor mine with Stevia and real raw butter. I am thinking about trying some tomorrow morning, to eat as a snack throughout the morning. I will report back once I try, to let you know how that goes.

I am now fitting in my clothing that I have not been able to wear in over a year. I still have a ways to go, but I am excited about the good start that I got. 18 lbs lost in 21 days. Now, I would like to lose another 15 lbs in 6 weeks. I think it is do-able!! Then I will be able to fit in every outfit I have!!!!

My detox foot pad sales are increasing, which are making me happy. It appears that many people are starting to focus on their health. That impresses me because I am in such despair about our healthcare system here, and really don't want to be taxed anymore. If everyone in the country used my foot pads for 1 month straight, and stopped putting toxins in their bodies, the health benefits would be so drastic, so many people's lives would change.

I need to do another acupuncture appointment with Jennifer at Winer Acupuncture. Then I have a rolfing appointment with Erin Herdina at Structure for Life in two weeks. So, after that, along with doing my physical therapy continuously, I think I will be in a great position to face spring and summer!! Come on, sunshine! I am waiting for you!

Consumer Reports found fecal contamination in 39% of pre-washed bagged salads that they tested!!

Supermarket greens packed with bacteria

Here's some news that could even make a die-hard vegan swear off salad: Pre-washed packaged greens sold in supermarkets are crawling with fecal filth.

Consumer Reports tested 208 bags of allegedly pre-washed salad blends -- the kind you'll find in supermarkets everywhere -- and found shockingly high levels of the bacteria that indicate fecal contamination and poor sanitation. Tests revealed unacceptably high levels of total coliforms in 39 percent of the salads, and 23 percent had high levels of the bacteria enterococcus.

What's more, they found this filth in organic and inorganic blends alike... and it didn't matter if the label said "washed," "pre-washed," or -- my favorite -- "triple washed," because clearly whoever was doing the washing was asleep at the hose.

Some of these salads had 100 times what experts considered acceptable levels for these bacteria.

But really, what's an "acceptable" level of poo in your food? Don't know about you, but for me that number is ZERO. That's why I don't eat any prepared foods, and I include pre-bagged supermarket bunny chow in that category.

It's not just the salad. Much of the mass-produced packaged foods and meats available in supermarkets are crawling with filth. And the junk they peddle in fast food joints is even worse (not to mention the risk of boogers, spittle and anything else the teenage chefs feel like "adding" to your meal).

The lesson here, if it's not clear already, is to be extra choosy about your food. Buy meats from a good butcher who sells grass-fed organic cuts. And treat pre-bagged veggies like any other packaged food: avoid them.

If you hate preparing lettuce and spinach so much that you're buying these feces-filled feedbags, then just skip them altogether.

Seeing red over greens,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

update on my diet -- 16 lbs lost in 18 days

I have 3 more days to go before I can drink my delicious raw milk again!! I can't wait! Monday morning for breakfast I am going to have a delicious healthy glass of milk! And, funny thing, I did this diet without being very hungry at all! YAY for me.

I am down 16 lbs and hope to lose 2 more pounds in the next 3 days. 18 lbs is not that bad, I guess, though I would have liked it to be closer to 25 lbs. I will continue to lose weight until I reach 140... I know some people consider that underweight for my 5'8" height... but it is where most of my cute clothes fit me the best... My goals are to only eat simple carbs (sugars, processed flour) on a very limited basis. Another important goal is portion control. Besides that, all else works. I won't limit myself of anything that I normally would eat. For example, I still won't go to fast food restaurants, nor will I eat processed foods, but I normally don't eat those anyway.

My grandma's first cousin's funeral is today, so that is why I am home from work. Then, later this afternoon I will be heading over to my duplex and checking out some measurements and quotes for a fence installation. I promised her a fence for her dog this spring!!

I hope to start promoting my detox foot pads more, in the next week. I want to do a huge sale to welcome spring in. Spring is a time to get ready for summer, to lose weight, start up your exercise regime again, and get healthy. Get rid of those toxins that are making you tired, lethargic, and in pain constantly. If you suffer from migraines, headaches, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or other chronic issues, then for sure the detox foot pads will help you.

Now, off to get ready for the day! I always seem to be running a bit behind!

Another stream of consciousness blog posting that really doesn't say much.

Yesterday I faxed my order to Chipotle for the 5 free burritos that I won, and then when we got there, my order was wrong. They gave me rice and beans, cheese, and no lettuce. And only one small scoop of mild tomato salsa. (I only wanted barbacoa, peppers/onions, 3 scoops tomato salsa and lettuce) But it wasn't the right time and place to complain, so I ate it anyway. The rice should not have been eaten on my diet. But I was with my colleagues and wasn't able to do anything about it. Oh well. I surely was disappointed, as I eat at Chipotle so many times, and have my favorite way of doing things that I don't like to stray from.

On another note, I spoke with a VP at Alpine Aire (a freeze dried food company) yesterday. As I continue on my quest for healthy long term food storage options, I was very impressed with them, and they need a shout out! I had left a message about my concerns with finding long term freeze dried foods without MSG or its many names (autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolyzed this or that, natural flavors, maltodextrin, etc). Most people don't even recognize that these other names for MSG are actually MSG. But what this Alpine Aire VP did, was do his own research, and he called me back and told me that he hadn't realized how many ways MSG can be hidden in foods. I was very impressed, to say the least. He researched on his own what products of his that I could buy, and not worry about MSG. And he gave me that list. Not only that, he said he now was going to change the labeling or way they promote their foods. Well, for sure I am going to buy his products!! How cool is that! And, whenever someone discusses freeze dried long term storage products with me, I will definitely refer them to his company.

Mountain House is another brand, I have both products right now, in my food storage pantry. We actually have only tried Mountain House Chili Mac, but Steve loved it, and if he loved it, then it is good enough for me! I worry about feeding him food he doesn't like.

Well, I just finished filling my orders for today for my detox foot pads. Now I have to finish my physical therapy and get heading off to work. I always run a little late. But most of the time I eat my lunch at my desk as I tend to work related issues, so it all works out!

Tomorrow I am taking the day off because I am attending a funeral. My grandma's first cousin and his family live in Minnesota -- my only relatives out here! He passed away last Saturday and so I will be traveling to Northfield (about 1 hour 45 min away) and there is no way I can just take off half a day... I have to leave by 9:30am, and then I wouldn't get back until after 3:30pm. So unfortunately I am taking the whole day off.

Updates on HCG diet, cortisone shots, and Far Infrared Sauna

Update on my HCG diet...

I have 5 1/2 days left of the diet. So far I am down 14 lbs in the 15 1/2 days of doing the diet. I can totally tell the difference when I look in the mirror, so I am happy. I have lost almost 4 inches off my waist. My goal was to lose 25 lbs on this diet, and 5 inches off my waist. I probably won't make the 25 lbs weight loss, but I think I will lose the 5 inches off my waist. I have not been hungry... as the days go by it is easier and easier. Thankfully junk food really never appealed to me (excluding chocolate and fudge -- that is ALWAYS appealing to me!). I am craving brown rice, raw milk, and sure, some chocolate... :) I had some pot roast for lunch today, and a large bowl of tomato and pepper soup from Trader Joe's. Oh my, it is so good! 200 calories from the soup, and the roast probably was about 150 calories total. I didn't eat any carrots, potatoes or gravy.

On another note, my right shoulder is feeling SO much better. The 2 cortisone shots I got (one on each shoulder) seemed to work. I would have to say my right shoulder feels 90% better. My left shoulder, is the most painful, and it probably feels 65-70% better. I am guesstimating the percentages. I am worried that the cortisone will wear off soon, and my pain will come back. Some people are telling me the shots last maybe 1 week, others say 6 months. All I know is that I really needed a way to attack that inflammation. Nothing was working! It would be fantastic if as the cortisone wears off, the inflammation doesn't come back, and the physical therapy that I do continues to prevent the inflammation from ever coming back. I plan on doing exercises every day for the rest of my life, if that what it takes to not have that pain anymore. I think I made the right choice in getting those shots. My quality of life was deteriorating. It was very bad.

I am taking a lot of good saunas lately. It is important to detox your body, and my detox foot pads are one way. But as I have mentioned before, Far Infrared Saunas are another good way. Here is a quote I found online regarding the difference between regular sauna and a far infrared sauna:

The key to a good detox from a sauna is to understand the effects of a deep healthy sweat. Research has been conducted to find out exactly what toxins are leaving the body when we sweat. The sweat of people using a conventional sauna was found to be 95 to 97% water while the sweat of those using an Far-infrared thermal system was 80 to 85% water with the non-water portion principally cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, toxic heavy metals (such as mercury and aluminum), sulfuric acid, sodium, ammonia and uric acid. (Far-Infrared, Technologies that Harness the Sun, Valerie Free, 2001.)

I also have been consistent in doing acupuncture at Winer Acupuncture. If you are in the Twin Cities and need a good recommendation for a licensed acupuncturist in the Minneapolis area, try her out!

Neurotoxins and Epilepsy

Over the past weekend I came across some research I had done previously, about excitotoxins (neuro-toxins) and some of the common symptoms that they cause. One of the more common side effects are seizures. This is near and dear to me because my cute adorable niece, who is in 1st grade, was recently diagnosed with general seizure disorder. Some of the neurotoxins that we seem to ingest on a daily basis include aspartame and MSG. Unfortunately there is msg hidden in almost everything. I try to avoid it but find out that I can't always avoid it.

It saddens me to see so many children out there, eating this junk. We had 3 girls over for the weekend, 10, 12, and 13 years old. All they wanted was junk food. So I made them what they would normally eat: Pizza, Mac and Cheese (with msg in the cheese sauce), cold cereal with high fructose corn syrup, along with genetically modified corn as the grain, soda pop with high fructose corn syrup, Capri Sun fake juice with high fructose corn syrup, chips galore with gobs of MSG, ice cream cones. I think the ice cream probably was the healthiest thing for them!!! Scary, huh!? At least I provided them raw milk, with tons of nutrients in it. Try getting them to eat veggies, fruits, even water! no way!!

I realize that this stuff is what is fed to most of our kids. No wonder so many of them are sick! Mental disorders, ADHD, learning disabilities, depression. I would be depressed and sick in the head, too, if I was exposed to all of this. What ever happened to eating home-cooked meals at the table with the family? Homemade mashed potatoes (not the boxed instant mashed potatoes, as they usually have MSG in them as well). Make your own gravy! Steamed or frozen veggies, a grilled chicken breast. How delicious is that! And if you make pasta, why not make your own spaghetti sauce? Boil the tomatoes, process them in the food processor, and spice them up as you simmer them on the stove with some Italian sausage!!

And, for overall healthy living, or even getting your health back, use my detox foot pads for a month straight. The detox foot pads can be used on children -- newborns, teenagers, and everyone in between. Don't let your children suffer the consequences of poor eating, poor nutrition, obesity, illness, learning disorders, etc. (MSG is what scientists use on lab rats to decrease their IQ). So try them out now. Children even seem to sleep better when they are wearing the foot pads. A well-rested child is a treasure!

Cortisone shots - my story of today's events!

I did it.

I got two cortisone shots this morning. My appt was at 7am, and I barely pulled into the parking lot at 6:58 and made a dash for the building in the rain. I made note of where the stairs were (quicker to run up 2 flights of stairs then wait for the elevator) when a lady sitting in the lobby area called to me. She didn't speak English too well, but I could obviously see her need: She had a young child, maybe 1 year old at the oldest, and she was trying to open up her stroller. Her hand was broken and she said she was waiting to be taken to the hospital, as it appears the doctors in this building advised this of her. She needed help opening up her stroller. I can't NOT stop and help. No way. I knew I was going to be a minute or two late for my appointment, but that is ok, she was in need.

Well, apparently that wasn't the case. I fought over that folded up stroller for a good 5 minutes and COULD NOT get it to open! I pushed down on the lever, grabbed part of it between my knees to gain leverage on opening that thing. No such luck. After awhile she told me to forget about it, it's ok, she said. And shooed me away.

Then I did my mad dash up the stairs and wasn't even panting when I got to the reception area of the rheumatologist's office. So this lady rheumatologist, well, I have to say she rocks in terms of patient care. I will tell you why. She diagnosed me with bursitis late last August, and for reasons I won't get into now regarding my health insurance, HSA, etc. I didn't start physical therapy until end of January of this year. I have been going to PT for 7 weeks now and the pain is still intense, though there are plenty of signs of improvement, it is just a LONG process. Well, before going to PT, I had to get a referral. I couldn't remember her name, so I tried getting one from my PCP, who I also went to for my joint problems (of course he didn't find anything wrong with me, but definitely took my money). He took 5 days to get back to me saying that he wouldn't approve the referral because PT doesn't help bursitis, and told me to take Aleve instead. (DOH! I HAVE been taking Aleve, too much, in fact! It isn't helping! Maybe with acute bursitis attacks, but not the chronic issue I have been dealing with since August of 2008). So that ticked me off and he isn't my PCP anymore. Anyone who asks why, I have a long list of reasons for this besides this incident. Needless to say, I have absolutely no respect for him as an MD. So, at the last minute I found out who the rheumatologist was that I saw last August, and in 2 hours, she had faxed over the referral.

Much better.

And, yesterday when I called her office hoping for a cortisone shot, she was able to fit me into her busy schedule before her regular office hours, at 7am this morning.

The shots themselves weren't so bad. They didn't hurt anymore than giving blood at the American Red Cross does. I got one in each shoulder, directly into my bursa sac. I have 7 bursa sacs in each shoulder, and she told me the name of the one she did, I can't remember the name, but if I saw a picture of them (a human medical picture) then I could point it out. It is the one right in the middle of the rotator cuff.

Now I am a bit sore. But other than that, I feel ok for the time being. I am not going to judge the effectiveness until at the earliest, Sunday.

And, I will be using my detox foot pads tonight, both in the sauna and then again while I sleep. I still am not 100% sure that they aren't poisoning my body, so I will have to detox my body.

Today is Friday, and Wednesday night I went to bed feeling pretty sick. So I took a high dose of NutraSilver, and when I woke up Thursday morning, I felt worse, so I called in sick. I took another 3 doses of NutraSilver on Thursday, and feel about 85% better this morning. I will take NutraSilver again tonight and hope to be 100% better tomorrow. I suppose it really does work, because it seems like I had the same cold that Steve had last week, that put him out for 8 days. (well, then again we know that men can't handle sickness as well as women can!). For me being out only 2 days (well, not being "out" but being sick), that isn't so bad. (Dosage is 50 drops in water 3x a day for 2 days, and then you should be feeling better -- I think it works!)

But the next issue is for me to stop GETTING sick in the first place. Which is one of the reasons I decided on the cortisone shots. I cannot sleep well. As a result, my immune system weakens, no matter how well I take care of myself. Sleep is SO important to one's health. If you don't get enough sleep, no matter what else you do positive for your health, it won't cut it. So since the pain has been keeping me up at night, something has to be done. That is what tipped my decision in favor of getting the shots.

I will report more later, to let you know how they worked!

Iodine

Remember the red stuff your mom put on cuts and scrapes?

It contained iodine, a mineral that kills germs. But iodine is more than just an antiseptic you put on your skin. It’s a trace element essential for life. A teaspoon is all you need in a lifetime, but most people in the U.S. are deficient.

The tragedy is that many doctors don’t recognize iodine’s role in disease. You may suffer from chronic fatigue and hear “there’s no cure.” Your cholesterol or blood pressure is too high, and nothing short of drugs brings it down. Or the doctor tells you the cysts in your breasts or ovaries lead to cancer.
You may have one of these things as a result of a simple iodine deficiency.

Almost 2 billion people in the world don’t get enough, and over 50 million people have brain damage caused by iodine deficiency. It’s the most preventable kind of brain damage in infants and children, yet 36.5% of school age children are deficient.1,2

Brain damage also affects adults. Even a small deficiency can lower your I.Q. by 15 points.3 It may be the deciding factor whether you can get a job and keep it.

Our ancestors didn’t have this problem. In ancient times, the water and soil were rich with minerals. Plants absorbed the iodine. Animals ate the plants. Man hunted, fished, and gathered the animals and plants.

But today, our modern day diet consists of foods grown by commercial farming corporations on depleted soil. Our water is polluted. We suffer the consequences.

We have to find a way to mimic the environment of our ancestors and find good sources of iodine.

Iodine helps prevent oxidative stress that leads to chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, or arthritis.4 It’s also critical for thyroid function. When your thyroid doesn’t work well, you can develop heart disease. Your cholesterol goes up, and you can have a heart attack.

You also need it for metabolism – to convert your food to energy. If you don’t have enough iodine to keep your thyroid healthy, you get sluggish and store fat on your body. You may also develop symptoms like fatigue, depression, and weight gain.

That’s not all. When you’re short on iodine, a lot of other things can go wrong:5,6

  • Breasts: A lot of iodine is concentrated in breast tissue. When you don’t have enough, you can develop fibrocystic breast disease. Up to 93% of American women have it. This is when your breasts become very painful and have nodules and cysts in them. The longer you have this disease, the higher potential for breast cancer.

  • Skin: 20% of iodine is stored in the skin. Most in the sweat glands. If you don’t have enough iodine, you get dry skin.

  • Digestion: Iodine is concentrated in the stomach. When you don’t have enough, you develop a condition that feels like you have too much stomach acid. But it’s just the opposite… you don’t have enough. If it goes on long enough, it can develop into stomach cancer.

  • Eyes: Tear glands in your eyes contain large amounts of iodine. Lack of iodine can cause dry eyes.

  • Mouth: Salivary glands in your mouth contain large amounts of iodine. Lack of iodine can cause dry mouth.

  • Ovaries: Iodine is concentrated in the ovaries. Women who lack iodine develop cysts. The greater deficiency, the more cysts. It can also lead to a disease called polycystic ovarian disease.

You can avoid these problems if you pay attention to your intake of iodine. The current suggested daily dose of 0.15 mg per day of iodine is too low. It doesn’t take into account all the organs of the body that need it to stay healthy. I suggest 12.5 mg up to 50 mg of iodine per day from natural sources to support better health. Here is a list of foods that contain iodine:

Food

Serving

Iodine (mcg)

Salt (iodized)
1 gram

77

Cod
3 ounces

99

Shrimp
3 ounces

35

Fish sticks
2 fish sticks

1 medium

60

Turkey breast, baked
3 ounces

34

Seaweed

May be greater than
4,500 mcg (4.5 mg)

If you find you need more support, check to see if your daily supplement contains iodine. If it doesn’t, take a trip to your local vitamin shop and ask for an iodine supplement or kelp.

It’s always best to talk to your doctor first. If you have symptoms of iodine deficiency, your doctor can take a simple test to determine your level.

To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

Earthquake preparedness from Emergency Essentials

This is Emergency Essentials latest post on their blog!

Earthquake Preparedness

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been 5 major earthquakes worldwide so far in 2010:
  • 1/12/10, Haiti, 7.0 magnitude
  • 2/4/10, Offshore Northern California, 5.9 magnitude
  • 2/18/10, China-Russia-N. Korea border, 6.9 magnitude
  • 2/26/10, Ryukyu Islands Japan, 7.0 magnitude
  • 2/27/10, Offshore Chile, 8.8 magnitude
Earthquakes can be very dangerous and can occur at any time of the year. Identifying potential hazards ahead of time and advance planning can reduce the chances of death, serious injury, or property damage.
According to the Earthquake Country Alliance based in Southern California, there are 7 major steps to take for earthquake safety:

  1. Secure it now! Conduct a "hazard hunt" to help identify and fix things such as unsecured televisions, computers, bookcases, furniture, unstrapped water heaters, etc. Securing these items now will help to protect you tomorrow.
  2. Make a plan. Planning for an earthquake is not much different from planning for a party or vacation. Make sure that your emergency plan includes evacuation and reunion plans; your out-of-state contact person's name and number; the location of your emergency supplies and other pertinent information.
  3. Make disaster kits. Everyone should have a disaster supply kit stored in accessible locations at home, at work and in your vehicle. Having emergency supplies readily available can reduce the impact of an earthquake. Your disaster supplies kits should include food, water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, a first aid kit, cash, extra medications, a whistle, fire extinguisher, etc.
  4. Is your place safe? Most houses are not as safe as they could be. Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, there are things that you can do to improve the structural integrity of your home. Some of the things that you might consider checking include inadequate foundations, unbraced cripple walls (a short wall built upon the foundation of a house that produces a high crawlspace), soft first stories (click here for details), unreinforced masonry and vulnerable pipes. Consult a contractor or engineer to help you identify your building's weaknesses and begin to fix them now.
  5. Drop, cover, and hold on! Learn what to do during an earthquake, whether you're at home, at work, at school or just out and about. Taking the proper actions, such as "Drop, Cover, and Hold On", can save lives and reduce your risk of death or injury. During earthquakes, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
  6. Check it out. One of the first things you should do following a major disaster is to check for injuries and damages that need immediate attention. Make sure you are trained in first aid and in damage assessment techniques. You should be able to administer first aid and to identify hazards such as damaged gas, water, sewage and electrical lines.
  7. Communicate and recover. Following a major disaster, communication will be an important step in your recovery efforts. Turn on your portable radio for information and safety advisories. For most Presidential declared disasters, resources will also be available from federal, state, and local government agencies.

Another great resource for earthquake safety and preparedness is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This is a very comprehensive site concerning disaster preparedness. You can also find additional information at the U.S. Geological Survey website.
Keep in mind that the best way to survive an earthquake is to be prepared for it. You can have greater confidence in being safe by knowing that you have made preparations for natural disasters that may come your way.

HCG Diet - getting my body back to a healthy weight

Homeopathic HCG Diet.

I started the HcG diet this week. In 2 days I have lost 3 pounds of fat so far. It is very difficult for me to eat a very low calorie diet, but the food I AM eating tastes delicious, so I am not depriving myself of anything tasty... I ate grilled chicken last night with some delicious peas. I used savory sea salt from Mother Earth Minerals to season almost everything. Today for lunch I had leftovers from yesterday. I also am eating grilled chicken salads with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing that has 30 calories. I am eating fresh fruit as snacks, and if I get too hungry between meals, I eat a few spoonfuls of fat free cottage cheese.

I am drinking a LOT of Jasmine Green Tea from Bigelow. I am also sweetening some koolaid with Stevia so it is no calories but yet I don't have to have the sugar. I LOVE stevia. My favorite flavors of koolaid are strawberry and fruit punch. I am not a big koolaid drinker, and miss my raw milk. 18 more days to go and my goal weight loss is 25 pounds. I think I can do it.

I am still taking my minerals and vitamins, and my Silica Gel and resveratrol.

My BMI was 25.8, which is just a tad above "healthy" weight for me. But because of my hypothyroidism, I could not lose weight. Now that my thyroid is acting better, I have to lose the weight. The sooner the better. I am used to fluctuating between 135-145 my whole adult life, so this was frustrating for me! I am tall, 5'8" and can carry my weight well, but who wants to "carry weight well". I want to feel good and look good, too. And, I don't want my clothes to fit me tight anymore. I HATE clothes shopping as much as I hate grocery shopping. I have plenty of nice clothes, I just need to finish this diet so I can wear them again! I am normally a size 6/8 and hate being a 10/12 so that will be something to look forward to!

So, I will try to give updates every few days. I am hoping for at least a pound of weight loss per day. That is do-able, as it burns FAT not MUSCLE, and I am using the sauna, and will try to use it more frequently during this diet. I can burn up to 900 calories in 1 sauna sitting, and that is more than the number of calories I am eating per day. I am very active and am doing my strengthening exercises, and using my "jiggly machine" (vibration exerciser). So... we will see.

I am not starving. I am hungry, but as my body adjusts to less calories, with the same activity level, I think I will do fine. My biggest craving right now is Strawberry Starbursts. I don't know why. It is easy for me to go to bed at night on an empty stomach than it is for me to skip breakfast. So that is hard, since we aren't supposed to eat breakfast, and then only eat a piece of fruit mid morning.

Other things I am craving: Ramen Noodles without the seasoning (I use non-msg beef or chicken broth), mexican food, Leeann Chin's sesame chicken (this is probably going to be my first regular meal again, in 19 days!)

And, I am using my detox foot pads. I want to make sure I am not putting more toxins into my thyroid to make it stagnant again! I am also doing minor other things, like not drinking out of plastic water bottles anymore, not storing my foods in plastic containers (I switched to glass pyrex containers and I think I really like them), and being consistent with my supplements.

One month from now I will be feeling amazing. Just you watch and see!!

NutraSilver, MMS and Morgellons

I have quite a few customers who are suffering from Morgellons disease. The ones I hear back from that are using both MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution) and NutraSilver, are doing the best. Their symptoms have disappeared and their brain fog has cleared. While this is not a cure -- no one knows what the cure actually is, by having some semblance of your life back, it is such a relief.

Until we find the cause and cure, at least we can allow folks who suffer from this horrible disease, to keep their symptoms in check.

The negative side to this is that NutraSilver is quite expensive, which is why I offer quantity discounts and FREE priority mail shipping. It has to be used continuously unless you want symptoms to come back.

Diatomaceous Earth is another amazing tool in helping fight Morgellons. But I will talk more about that another time.

Good luck, and keep up hope, all of you who are suffering from Morgellons!

FAR Infrared Sauna Therapy Benefits

I am going to write about Far Infrared Saunas and their benefits. Well, I am going to cut and paste below what was taken off of Evolution Health's website. That is where I purchased my sauna. I have had it for 18 months now. I use it about 3 times a week. I know I should use it more, especially since I am doing PT for my shoulder bursitis and rotator cuff tendinitis. I also should stretch while in the sauna, but I am not much of one for super hot things. It gets to be about 125F, which is less than regular saunas. It is not a steam sauna, which are not as effective as a FAR Infrared Sauna.

I have a 3-person sauna in my basement, I am glad I got the 3-person one. Two adults can comfortably sit in it, however 3 would not work. Maybe 3 children would. When I first started using the Sauna, it would take me over 25 min to even start "glistening" -- that is how bad my body didn't want to detox. Now, I start sweating within 15 minutes, a drastic change. I also notice a difference if I do a quick workout before I go into the sauna, vs. just going in cold. And, I read somewhere, but I don't know exactly where, that once you are out of the sauna, let the sweat dry on your skin before you take a shower. There was a reason for it, but I can't remember it now.

Also, occasionally I use my detox foot pads while I am in the sauna. The bottoms of my feet don't sweat ever... but the heat in the sauna helps gobs of toxins to come out in just a matter of 30-45 min. This is especially good if I am suffering from a migraine and want relief ASAP.

I haven't noticed any difference in my skin -- I have pretty decent skin as it is. I do not use any toxic face creams or lotions or soaps. And most of my makeup is organic. I don't use SPF and the sun really takes care of me (the sun doesn't cause wrinkles or skin cancer... it actually prevents cancer and pulls toxins out of your body... but more on that another time). My skin probably looks like someone in their early 20s, vs. mid 30s. So I am doing ok in that regard. (I use ozonated olive oil morning and night on my skin). So here are the benefits of the far infrared sauna. It is taken directly from Evolution Health's website.

FAR Infrared Sauna Therapy Benefits

Passive Cardiovascular Conditioning Effect
Infrared Sauna Therapy makes it possible for people in wheelchairs, or those who have a disability that affect their ability to exercise to achieve a cardiovascular training effect. Regular use of a sauna may impact a similar stress on the cardiovascular system, and its regular use may be as effective, as a means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories, as regular exercise." - Journal of the American Medical Association 8/7/81.
Due to the deep penetration of the infrared rays generated by the Far Infrared Sauna, there is a heating effect deep in the muscular tissues and the internal organs. The body responds to this deep-heating effect via an hypothalamic-induced increase in both heart volume and rate. This beneficial heart stress leads to a sought-after cardiovascular training and conditioning effect. Medical researches confirm the use of a sauna provides cardiovascular conditioning as the body works to cool itself and involves substantial increases in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate.
Weight Loss
Fat becomes water-soluble at a temperature of 100 F° before it begins to dissolve and enter the bloodstream to be removed from the body. In a FIR Sauna fat is also removed through sweat and cellulite. Weight loss is one of the benefits of using a FIR sauna each day for only 20-40 minutes. A single sauna session will burn 200-500 calories, as many as rowing a boat for 30 minutes or running several miles. Many people who have attempted weight loss through dieting and have not been successful will be pleased with their results from using a FIR sauna. Often the inability to lose weight is associated with chemical toxicity. As these toxins are removed from the body while using the FIR sauna, weight loss naturally follows. FIR saunas are the ONLY natural, healthy way to burn calories without exercising.
Use of a FIR sauna has a cumulative effect on the body, meaning that using it daily magnifies its benefits. The first time you use the FIR sauna will be a pleasant experience. However, after several days and then weeks, detoxification, weight loss, immune building and other benefits will increase dramatically. One must experience this cumulative effect to understand it completely.
Burns up to 900 & more calories in just one 30-minute Infrared Sauna Therapy session. Here are how many calories a 150-pound person normally burns up in 30 minutes of exercise:
SPORT : CALORIES

    • Rowing (peak effort) : 600
    • Swimming (crawl stroke) : 300
    • Jogging : 300
    • Tennis (fast game) : 265
    • Chopping Wood : 265
    • Cycling (10mph) : 225
    • Golfing (without a cart) : 150
    • Walking (3.5mph) : 150
    • Bowling : 120
    • Vigorous Racquet Ball : 510
    • Marathon Running 593

Musculoskeletal Cases - success reported with infrared treatments

  • TMJ Arthritis · Muscle Spasms - reduced or eliminated
  • Traumatic Arthritis
  • Low Back Pain - relieved
  • Acel-decel Injury Sequelae
  • Adhesions - lengthened or more easily broken; they are common in competitive athletes, trauma and repetitive stress syndromes
  • Disc-protrusion Related Neuralgia
  • Brain Contusion - accelerated healing
  • Tight Shoulders - relaxed
  • Compression Fracture - Example: pain stopped for 3 days with only a single treatment
  • Spinal Cord Shock - post traumatic shock reversed
  • Muscle Tension - relaxed
  • Post-exercise Muscle Pain - vital to competitive athletes
  • Arthritis: Gouty, Rheumatoid, DJD - each substantially relieved or improved
  • Shoulder Pain - relieved or eliminated
1. Infrared Sauna Therapy increases the extensibility of collagen tissues.
  • Tissues heated to 45°C and then stretched exhibit a non-elastic residual elongation of about 0.5 ~0.9% that persists after the stretch is removed. It does not occur in these same tissues when stretched at normal tissue temperatures. Thus 20 stretching sessions can produce around 10 ~ 18% increase in length in tissues heated and stretched.
  • This effect would be especially valuable in working with ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, fasciae, and synovium that have become scarred, thickened or contracted.
  • Such stretching at 45°C caused much less weakening in stretched tissues for a given elongation than a similar elongation produced at normal tissue temperatures.
  • The cited experiments clearly show that low-impact stretching can produce a significant residual elongation when heat is applied together with stretching or range-of-motion exercises, which is also safer than stretching tissues at normal tissue temperatures.
  • This safer stretching effect is crucial in properly training competitive athletes so as to minimize their "down" time from injuries.

2. Infrared Sauna Therapy decreases joint stiffness directly.

  • There was a 20% decrease in stiffness at 45°C as compared with 33°C in rheumatoid finger joints, which correlated perfectly to both subjective and objective observation of stiffness.
  • Any stiffened joint and thickened connective tissues should respond in a similar fashion.

3. Infrared Sauna Therapy relieves muscle spasms.

  • Muscle spasms have long been observed to be reduced through the use of heat, be they secondary to underlying skeletal, joint, or neuro-pathological conditions.
  • This result is possibly produced by the combined effect of heat on both primary and secondary afferent from spindle cells and from its effects on Golgi tendon organs. The effects produced by each of these mechanisms demonstrated their peak effect within the therapeutic temperature range obtainable with radiant heat

4. Infrared Sauna Therapy produces pain relief.

  • Pain may be relieved via the reduction of attendant or secondary muscle spasms. Pain is also at times related to ischemia due to tension or spasm, which can be improved by the hyperemia that heat-induced vasodilatation produces. This then breaks the feedback loop, in which the ischemia leads to further spasm and then more pain.
  • Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. In one dental study, repeated heat applications eventually led to abolishment of the whole nerve response responsible for pain arising from dental pulp.
Heat may lead to both increased endorphin production and a shutting down of the so-called "spinal gate" of Melzack and Wall, each of which can reduce pain.

5. Infrared Sauna Therapy increases blood flow.

  • Heating of one area of the body produces reflex-modulated vasodilatation in distant-body areas, even in the absence of a change in core body temperature; i.e. heat one extremity and the contralateral extremity also dilates; heat a forearm and both lower extremities dilate; heat the front of the trunk and the hand dilates.
  • Heating of muscles produces an increased blood flow level similar to that seen during an exercise.
  • Temperature elevation produces an increase in blood flow and dilation directly in capillaries, arterioles, and venuies, probably through direct action on their smooth muscles. The release of bradykinin, released as a consequence of sweat-gland activity, also produces increased blood flow and vasodilatation.
  • Whole-body hyperthermia, with a consequent core temperature elevation, further induces vasodilatation via an hypothalamic-induced decrease in sympathetic tone on the arteriovenous anastomoses. Vasodilatation is also produced by axonal reflexes and by reflexes that change vasomotor balance.

6. Infrared Sauna Therapy assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, edema and exudates.

  • The increased peripheral circulation provides the transportation needed to help evacuate the edema, which can help stop inflammation, decrease pain and help speed healing.

Researchers reported over 90% success in a summary of Chinese studies that assessed the effect of infrared therapy on:

  • Soft tissue injury
  • Lumbar strain
  • Periarthritis of the shoulder
  • Sciatica
  • Pain during Menstruation
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Eczema with infection
  • Post-surgical infections
  • Diarrhea
  • Cholecystitis
  • Neurasthenia
  • Pelvic infection
  • Pediatric Pneumonia
  • Tineas
  • Frostbite with inflammation
  • Facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy

Japanese researchers, as reported in the book Infrared Therapy by Dr. Yamajaki, have produced the following provocative results.
  • Burns: relieves pain and decreases healing time, with less scarring
  • High Blood Pressure: safe in 40 ~ 50°C range and regular use helps to lower it
  • Low Blood Pressure: sauna trains body to raise it
  • Brain Damage: accelerated repair in brain contusions
  • Short-term memory improved
  • Cancer of the tongue reversed
  • Toxic Electromagnetic Fields: effects neutralized
  • Cerebral Hemorrhages: recovery is both sped up and significantly enhanced
  • Auto Accident: related soft tissue injury - daily sessions were used until best healing was attained; then Infrared systems were used to deal with permanent residuals. The pain control effect on the chronic residuals from such injuries lasted three days before another treatment was necessary.
  • Arthritis, acute and chronic: was greatly relieved
  • Gouty Arthritis: relieved
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: relieved
  • Menopause Symptoms: relieved chills, nervousness, depression, dizziness, head & stomach aches
  • Weight Loss: first, through sweating and the energy use needed to produce the sweat and second, through direct excretion of fat

Blood Circulation - the following ailments may be associated to poor circulation and, thus, may respond well to the increased peripheral dilation associated with Infrared application:

  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Backaches
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Nervous Tension
  • Diabetes
  • Children's Over-tired Muscles
  • Varicose Veins
  • Neuritis
  • Bursitis
  • Rheumatism
  • Strained Muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Stretch Marks
  • Menstrual Cramps
  • Upset Stomachs
  • Leg and Decubitus Ulcers: failed to heal using conventional approaches
  • Post-Operative Edema: treatment with infrared has been so successful that hospital stays were reported to have been reduced by 25%

Coronary Artery Disease, Arteriosclerosis and Hypertension
Finnish researchers, talking about the regular use of conventional saunas state that there are abundant evidences to suggest that blood vessels of regular sauna-goers remain elastic and pliable longer due to the regular dilation and contraction of blood vessels induced by sauna use. German medical researchers reported in "Dermatol Monatsschr" in 1989 that a single whole-body session of infrared-induced hyperthermia lasting over one hour had only beneficial effects on subjects with stage I-II essential hypertension. Each subject experienced a rise in core body temperature to a maximum level of 38.5°C (101.3°F). All of the subjects in one experiment had significant decrease in arterial, venous and mean blood pressure that lasted for at least 24 hours and was linked, according to the researchers, to a persistent peripheral dilation effect. An improvement in plasma viscosity was also noted. Another group of similar hypertension patients was also studied under the same conditions of infrared-induced hyperthermia, with an eye toward more carefully evaluating the circulatory system effects induced by this type of whole-body heating. During each infrared session, there was a significant decrease of blood pressure, cardiac ejection resistance, and total peripheral resistance in every subject. There was also a significant increase during each session of the subjects' heart rates, stroke volumes, cardiac outputs and ejection fractions. The researchers cite these last three effects as evidences that the stimulation of the heart during infrared-induced hyperthermia is well compensated, while the prior list of effects clearly show the microcirculatory changes that lead to the desired result of a lowering of blood pressure.

Problems often accompanying Aging, that have been reported to have been alleviated or reduced by Infrared Therapy:

  • Menopause
  • Cold hands and feet: A physical therapist found 20~50% improvement was maintained
  • High Blood Pressure: Example - Case of a diabetic with a systolic decrease from 180 to 125 and a concurrent 10 lbs. weight loss after infrared use
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: 7 out of 7 cases successfully resolved in one clinical trial
  • Radiation Sickness: relieves signs and symptoms
  • Cancer Pain: relieved pain in later stages of cancer extremely well
  • Sequelae of Strokes: Example - Hemiparesis relieved over time
  • Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy: reduced
  • Duodenal Ulcers: eliminated
  • Pain: which prevented sleep or limited useable sleeping positions were relieved
  • Compression Fracture Pain: Example - pain gone for 3 days after each treatment in steoporotic compression fractures
  • Hemorrhoids: reduced § Cystitis: gone
  • Cirrhoisis of Liver: reversed
  • Gastritis: relieved
  • Hepatitis: gone
  • Asthma & Bronchitis: cleared up (like moving to Arizona's dry air)
  • Chron's Disease: gone
  • Post Surgical Adhesions: reduced
  • Leg ulcers: healed when previously static and resistant to other care
  • Keloids: significantly softened and, in some cases, completely gone

Ear, Nose and Throat conditions relieved with Infrared treatments:

  • Chronic middle-ear inflammation or infection
  • Sore throats
  • Tinitus: chronic severe case cleared with 10 Infrared treatments
  • Nose bleeding

Skin conditions benefited by Infrared treatments

  • Nettle rash
  • Clogged pores are unplugged of cosmetics creating a skin texture and tone of unexcelled quality. Mikkel Aaland's book Sweat (Capra Press, 1978) quotes a Finnish doctor to the effect that: "The best dressed foreigner can come into a doctor's office, and when his skin is examined, it is found to be rough as bark. On the other hand, as a result of the sauna, the skin of any Finnish worker is supple and healthy"
  • Poor skin tone is restored to a more youthful level
  • Scars and pain from burns or wounds are decreased in severity and extent. Infrared therapy is used routinely in burn units throughout Asia
  • Lacerations heal quicker and with less pain and scarring
  • Acne: Three or four infrared treatments may open pores that have not been functioning in years, forcing out clogging cosmetics and loosening dead outer skin. The sauna is thus a boon to teenage skin, clearing acne and blackheads
  • Body odor: by improving the function of the skin, the infrared treatments may eliminate the cause of offensive body odor. It definitely reduces body odorr induced by occupational exposure to odorous chemicals
  • Eczema and Psoriasis: reported to have responded extremely well to infrared treatments
  • Sunburn: according to the 9th edition of Clayton's Electrotherapy, "infrared is the only antidote to excessive ultraviolet radiation."
  • Keloids forms at a reduced rate in those prone to their formation with infrared treatments and may be softened by use of infrared systems if they have form,

    Beauty

    • Excellent for increasing blood circulation to the skin, which is essential for beautiful, youthful, glowing skin.
    • A new "inner glow" as the skin is free of accumulated dirt and dry skin cells, due to deep cleansing of impurities.
    • Improves the conditions of acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns and any skin lesions and cuts.
    • Open wounds heal quicker with reduced scarring.
    • Removes roughness, leaving skin baby smooth and soft again.
    • Firms and improves skin tone and elasticity

    Scars on Skin
Scars fully formed, even keloids, may be gradually softened. Burns and other wounds or incisions may heal with significantly reduced scarring.

    Cellulite

    • Cellulite is a gel-like substance made up of fat, water and wastes, which are trapped in pockets below the skin. An Infrared Thermal System can assist this condition, as profuse sweating helps clear this form of unwanted debris from the body.
    • European beauty specialists confirm that a sauna will greatly speed any anti-cellulite program.
    • Due to at least twice the depth of heat penetration into cellulite combined with up to 10 times the level of heating in these tissues, an Infra Therapist System can be significantly more effective than any conventional sauna.

    Flexibility:
A Far-Infrared Sauna is perfect as a "heat therapy room" for athletes looking for a pre-workout warm-up to warm up muscles and increase flexibility, helping to prevent injury. It's also ideal for pre-warm-up for physical therapy and massage therapy, or for a relaxing, wind-down at the end of a stress-filled day.

    Relieves pain and Stiffness:
The deep heat of the far infrared sauna helps peripheral blood vessels dilate, bringing relief and healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries. Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscle, so they recover faster. Muscles relax most readily when tissues are warm, for greater flexibility and range of motion.

    Improves the Immune System:

Sauna's deep heat raises your body temperature, inducing an artificial fever. As it works to combat the "fever," the body's immune system is strengthened. Combined with the elimination of toxins and wastes produced by the intense sweating, the overall health and resistance to disease is increased.

Increases Blood Circulation and Strengthens Cardiovascular System:
While the moisture on the surface of the skin evaporates and thus cools the body, a number of other changes occur in the body to release the heat as quickly as possible. The heart beats harder and faster , pumping more blood through the dilated blood vessels, thus achieving the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise.
As the body increases sweat production to cool itself, the heart works harder pumping blood at a greater rate to boost circulation, supplying the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise. Heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate increase, while diastolic blood pressure drops, for improved overall cardiovascular fitness.
